Nick Pugh Studio

Imago Dei Visionary Art
Site design   •  CMS   •  WordPress integration   •  Flash Animation
Imago Dei is a Humboldt, California-based painter. He needed an easy-to-use and flexible web site to present his voluminous life's work to the public. His CMS was customized to include the ability to assign an unlimited number of detailed images to individual artworks. Within a week of site launch, Imago Dei had uploaded and categorized hundreds of images of his art works, with no foreknowledge of web programming and barely any experience using the web in general.

Videographer Asset Management System
Custom Application design and programming
A web-based toolset for Ruth Boyle, a videographer who produces documentaries in third-world locations. Ruth needed a system that she could access from any Internet connection, to serve as a repository for video clip uploads as well as a library of material for her and her private clients. Video resources can be uploaded into the system and cross-categorized, as well as tagged with keywords, descriptions, transcripts, notes, copyright, source format, cutpoints, and both high and low resolution video clips. The system includes a database of countries, contributors, and contributor roles, all of which can be assigned to each clip. The application also features a Source Tape Generator, which exports ordered cutpoint selections from an unlimited selection of video resources as Final Cut Pro automated playlists.

Histrionics
CMS • Flash • Front-end programming • Sound design • Zoomify integration
Histrionics is not your typical web site, but more of a work of so-called "new media art" in that it invites the user to explore and discover the features hidden within. It was conceived by Jay Brown, Executive Director of Lijiang Studio, an artists community with two locations in China. Every aspect of the 100% Flash web site is controllable from the CMS; even the links that are associated with the animated birds can be changed. Hint: To view the Zoomify galleries, click on "Life."

News Headlines Data Visualization Application
Custom Application design and programming
A DHTML-powered multi-document summarization application for a data mining platform. The application imports platform-generated XML document clusters containing tens of thousands of topic-sensitive news headlines. Per the client's request, a Google News-like dashboard provides categorization, "breaking news" and searching functionality. Any number of newsworthy topics can then be selected for on-the-fly aggregation. The frequency of publishing activity within the news topics topics is displayed with links to the articles themselves along zoomable timelines.

The usefulness of the tool lies in the ability to determine when certain news topics receive the most media attention.

Art History Timelines
Site conception • Design • Programming
Art History Timelines is a pet project of mine from 2004. My objective was to create a repository of art images and integrate it into a dynamic timeline that plots out the dates of artworks. One feature that makes this project unique is that the user can select multiple art genres and instantly generate a composite timeline. The backend toolset provides extensive categorization capabilities and cross-referencing of images, artists, writeups, and metadata. The database includes a trove of high-res Dada imagery, in particular the photos of Man Ray and the work of German Dadaist John Heartfield.
